Admissions:

  3. Unofficial transcripts:Non-English transcripts must be accompanied by an English translation. Records from non-U.S. Institutions must have grades or marks and contain a copy of diploma if the degree has been conferred.
  4. Official transcripts:By Mail: Official transcripts should have an original signature or a raised university seal, and must be in a sealed envelope that has been signed or stamped by the issuing university’s registrar or records office. Applicants may send official transcripts with an Application Materials Cover Sheet, or applicants can request that institutions send transcripts directly to the Office of Graduate Admission.
  5. Foreign Credentials with Transfer Credits: Applicants who would like to transfer academic credits earned at non-U.S. institutions are required to have their transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (WES), our preferred provider, or by another member of the National Association of Credit Evaluation Services (NACES). A course-by-course evaluation must be prepared for each transcript.
  6. Resume: Submit a brief résumé or curriculum vitae summarizing your academic qualifications, relevant work experience, volunteer or community work, travel, exhibitions, public speaking, or any other experiences relevant to your field of study, including dates and positions held. Also note any special language or computer skills that you have.
  7. Two Personal Statements: Submit a two-part essay in a single Word document. Your submission should not exceed five pages.
    1. a.       Part One: Autobiographical Statement (250-500 word limit). In a short autobiographical statement, tell us about yourself. You can write about your education, your family, your talents and passions, particular intellectual influences, people you have met, work you’ve done that has helped make you the person you are, or significant places or events in your life, especially as they relate to your field of study.
    2. b.      Part Two: Academic Statement of Interests (500-750 word limit). Please describe the academic and intellectual interests, progress, and achievements that have contributed to your decision to apply for graduate study in this field.
    3. Recommendations: You are required to submit two letters of recommendation from faculty or people with whom you have worked professionally.
    4. TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE:If English is not your native language, submit results of the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System), or PTE (Pearson Test of English). The minimum scores required for acceptance to this program are: TOEFL 92 (internet-based exam), IELTS 7.0, PTE 63.Students required to take these tests can obtain further information from the TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE websites.Applicants also have the option of enrolling in The New School English as a Second Language (ESL) program. Students must pass Level 6 to waive the TOEFL requirement. Visit the ESL website for more information.
    5. Interview: Students who meet the requirements listed above may be invited for an interview in person or by phone.
    6. Writing Sample (optional): If you would like to submit a writing sample that you feel reflects your strengths as a critical thinker and writer can be uploaded. The sample should be a single document no longer than ten pages in length.

Portfolio:

  1. In addition to submitting the online application, Parsons requires that you submit a portfolio through Slideroom.

Admissions:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) minimum scores (SCAD code 5631):

a. 550 on the paper-based test

b. 85 on the Internet-based test with minimum score of 20 on each section.*

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) composite score of at least 6.5 with a score of at least 6.5 in both speaking and writing.

American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) score of at least “high advanced” on the writing proficiency portion of the test.

SAT score of at least 500 on the critical reading portion, or 22 on both the reading and writing sections of the ACT.

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) score of at least 5 in English language.

  1. Two letters of recommendation: Letters of recommendation from two professors, advisers, supervisors or community leaders who have had immediate contact with the applicant and who have knowledge of the applicant’s level of commitment and history of achievement.
  2. Statement of Purpose: The statement should be a 500- to 750-word overview of the applicant’s academic and professional accomplishments and should demonstrate a high level of interest in and a highly developed understanding of the discipline.

Portfolio:

Fashion

Portfolios should demonstrate a thorough understanding of the design process through mood boards, fashion illustrations, flats and sewn garments from two-three collections. Applicants should show competency in the use of various industrial machinery and sewing techniques, and should submit 2D documentation of full-scale patterns, drapes and original sewn garments. The portfolio should demonstrate a high level of technical and conceptual ability, as well as creative research, investigation, problem-solving and an awareness of material processes. Applicants also should demonstrate a well-developed personal and aesthetic/design direction in the ability to develop work around a theme or concept as evidenced by a series of related works.

Applicants must use the online file management system SlideRoom to submit a portfolio for review. From SlideRoom, applicants can upload still images, Word documents, digital and multimedia files and find instructions for creating a corresponding inventory of work in the portfolio (required) including titles, dates, media, dimensions, and specific responsibilities on group projects, if applicable. A fee of US$10 is charged by SlideRoom for each portfolio submission.
